Veteran Friendly Practice

We are now an Armed Forces Veteran Friendly Accredited GP Practice.  This means that any veteran (includes anyone who has servied for at least one day in the Armed Forces (Regular and Reserve) can be seen as a priority for NHS treatment.

Priority is given to any condtions partially or wholley atributable to military service and treatment for the high proportion of MSK and hearing problems amongst veterans.

Veterans are treated as a special group as service in the armed forces is different from other occupations as they relinquished civil liberties and put themselves in harm's way to protect others.   Therefore the risk of serious injury is substantially increased.  It has been shown that 52% of veterans have a long-term disability/illness which is higher than in the general adult population, where the figure is 35%.

Veterans who served at time of recently military operations are more likely than non-veterans to report a higher prevalence of common mental disorders, PTSD and alcohol misuse.   The average length of time for veterans to come forwarde about mental health problems is 4 years.
